![]() ![]() When we first heard about the vivoactive HR we assumed Garmin had simply added an optical heart rate monitoring to back of the vivoactive, but it did much more. The most recent evidence is the vivoactive HR, a latest addition to the company’s popular vivo series of fitness bands. Garmin hasn’t let competition from Fitbit, Samsung, or even Apple slow down its quest to build the perfect GPS fitness watch for every single segment of the activity tracking market. If I got a VivoActive HR I would also get a heart-rate strap or a cheap ANT+ cycle computer (Cateye Stealth for $50?) to use as a display for the ANT+ repeater capability built into the watch.Heart rate monitor not reliable during vigorous exercise You can't see your wrist while riding a bike. Here's the issue with the VivoActive HR and /u/Dark-Fx has the same issue with his mio-link. There are apps to get around this in the Garmin app store ( ) that work well, but recently I just set up the stock data fields such that one page has current cadence, hr, and speed, and the second page has average speed, distance, and time (since I only check these once in a while). The only downside is that the stock cycling display only shows 3 fields at a time and you have to scroll through them (or set auto-scroll) to see more. I have a first-gen VivoActive mounted to my handlebar (garmin watch mount is awesome), and it makes a great bike computer as long as you don't plan to get a power meter. And want options with other sports/activity. I really just want the general stats for biking speed distance time. I'm looking into the fenix 2/3 or getting the vivoactive.( I have a external hr monitor that I use with the vivofit og.) But I do need a step counter for work ( a new health plan they are doing this year). The vivoactive hr looks gross and from what I have been reading not the best for what I want. Would you recommend doing it this way or does the garmin vivoactive doesn't show the bike stats like I would hope? I figured this would be a good route, since I need a activity tracker (links up with my health insurance for work) and was going to buy a computer for my bike, I thought this would be the best way of going about this. I have the garmin vivofit and I love it just wish it had more features. I'm looking into buying the garmin for the HR interface and the direct link with strava.
